“How much does SEO cost?” is one of the first questions Abbotsford business owners ask, and one of the least often answered directly. Most agencies ask you to fill in a form first. This guide explains how SEO is usually priced, what actually drives the cost up or down, what you should expect at different levels of spend, and exactly what Shaxx Digital charges. If you are comparing providers rather than prices, our SEO Abbotsford page explains what our local SEO work includes.
The short answer
Shaxx Digital publishes two local SEO plans:
| Plan | Price | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Local SEO Starter | $397 / month | Core local visibility: technical fixes, Google Business Profile, on-page improvements, business listings and monthly reporting. |
| Local SEO Authority | $597 / month | Everything in Starter, plus monthly content, authority building, a review strategy and broader location coverage. |
Both are listed on our pricing page with the terms that apply. Across the wider Canadian market, local SEO for a small business is commonly priced as a monthly retainer, and you will see quotes well below and well above these numbers. The rest of this guide explains why.
How SEO is usually priced
SEO providers in Canada generally use one of four models.
Monthly retainers
The most common model for local businesses. You pay a fixed amount each month for an agreed scope of ongoing work. It suits SEO because the work is ongoing: Google keeps changing, competitors keep moving and content needs to keep growing.
One-time projects
Some work has a clear start and end: a technical clean-up, a site migration, or building out a set of service pages. These are often quoted as a fixed project fee. A website and SEO audit is a good example of a one-off piece of work, and ours starts with a free call.
Hourly consulting
Some consultants bill by the hour for advice, training or reviews. This works well if you have someone in-house to carry out the recommendations.
Performance-based pricing
A few providers charge per ranking or per lead. Be careful here. Pay-per-ranking deals can reward rankings for searches nobody uses, and they encourage risky tactics. Read the contract closely before signing anything tied to positions.

What changes the cost
Two Abbotsford businesses can need very different amounts of SEO work. These are the factors that matter most.
How competitive your service is. Ranking a niche specialist service in Abbotsford is usually far easier than ranking for “lawyer” or “dentist”, where many established businesses compete. More competition means more content, more authority building and more time.
How many areas you want to cover. One city is simpler than Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Mission, Langley and Surrey. Each additional area usually needs its own genuinely useful page and local signals.
The state of your website. A fast, well-structured site lets the monthly budget go into growth. An old site with broken pages, duplicate content or no service pages needs fixing first, which either takes up the budget or requires a separate project.
Your Google Business Profile and reviews. For map results, reviews matter a great deal. A business with a handful of reviews competing against businesses with dozens has more ground to make up.
How much content you need. Writing useful service pages and articles takes real time. Plans that include regular content cost more than plans that do not, and that difference is usually worth understanding before comparing quotes.
Who does the work. Large agencies carry account managers and overheads. Freelancers and small studios often cost less for the same hands-on work, but capacity is limited. Overseas providers can be cheaper still, though local knowledge and communication can suffer.
What you get at different levels
Rather than quote other companies’ prices, here is a practical way to think about what a monthly SEO budget can realistically cover for a local business.
At the lowest end, expect mostly automated reports, basic listings and very little hands-on work. Be wary of any plan that cannot tell you, in plain language, what will be done each month.
At a core local level, like our $397 Starter plan, you should get real work on the fundamentals: technical fixes, a properly optimised Google Business Profile, improvements to your main service pages, consistent listings and an honest monthly report. For a single-location business in a moderately competitive niche, this is often enough to make steady progress.
At a growth level, like our $597 Authority plan, you should also get regular new content, active work on earning relevant links and mentions, a review strategy, and coverage of several service areas. This suits businesses in competitive niches or covering several Fraser Valley communities.
At higher budgets, agencies typically add more content, more locations, paid campaign management or larger teams. That can make sense for multi-location businesses or very competitive markets, but many small Abbotsford businesses do not need it to start.
What should always be included
Whatever you pay, a monthly SEO plan should include:
- A clear written scope of what will be done.
- A baseline before work starts, so progress can be measured.
- Access to your own data. You should own your Google Business Profile, Search Console and Analytics accounts.
- Regular reporting in plain language, with map and organic results reported separately.
- No guaranteed rankings. Nobody controls Google, and a guarantee usually means the provider is measuring something easy instead of something useful.
Red flags when comparing quotes
- Guaranteed first-page or first-place rankings.
- Vague deliverables like “SEO optimisation” with no detail.
- Long contracts with no clear exit.
- The provider owns your Google Business Profile or website accounts.
- Large numbers of cheap backlinks. Purchased links can do real harm.
- Reports full of rankings for searches nobody uses.
Is SEO worth it for an Abbotsford business?
It depends on your margins and your patience. SEO is slower than ads. Meaningful movement for competitive service searches usually takes three to six months. But the visibility it builds does not stop the day you stop paying, which is the main difference from paid advertising. If you need enquiries this month, ads are usually the faster tool; we compare the two in SEO vs Google Ads for local businesses.
A simple test: work out what one new customer is worth to you over a year. If a few extra customers a month would comfortably cover the plan, SEO is worth a serious look.
