SEO Pricing in Canada 2026: What You Should Pay

Canadian SEO runs $500-$5,000+/month. The honest 2026 breakdown by tier, the red flags at each price point, and published pricing to compare against.

Ask ten Canadian agencies what SEO costs and you’ll get nine “it depends” and one quote form. Here’s the actual market in 2026, so you can walk into any sales call knowing the numbers.

The Canadian SEO market at a glance

  • Hourly consultants: $100–$500/hour
  • Monthly retainers: $500 to $20,000+/month, with serious local programs clustering at $750–$5,000/month
  • One-time audits: $500–$5,000
  • “$99 SEO”: a subscription to directory spam that can get your site penalized. Not a tier, a trap.

(Those retainer ranges match what the bigger BC agencies publish themselves; we’re not being generous to make a point.)

What each tier actually buys

$500–$800/month, maintenance tier. Google Business Profile upkeep, basic citations, some on-page fixes, monthly report. Fine for a solo operator in a small market defending an existing position. Won’t move a competitive ranking.

$800–$2,000/month, the local growth tier. This is where most Fraser Valley and Metro Vancouver service businesses should be. It should include: GBP management and posting, local landing pages built and improved, review generation, technical SEO, citation cleanup, and — increasingly — being a clear enough source that generative answer panels quote you, because a growing share of “best X near me” questions get answered above the organic results rather than in them.

$2,000–$5,000/month, competitive/multi-location tier. Content programs, link building, multiple cities or locations, aggressive niches (legal, dental, home services in Vancouver proper).

$5,000+/month, enterprise, e-commerce at scale, national brands. If you’re reading a local-business blog post, this isn’t you yet.

Red flags at any price

  1. Guaranteed #1 rankings. Nobody controls Google. Guarantee deliverables and KPIs, never positions.
  2. No published pricing anywhere. If the price depends on how you sound on the phone, it’s not a price, it’s a negotiation you’re losing. (It’s why we publish ours.)
  3. 12-month lock-in contracts. Confident agencies keep clients with results. No lock-in is the honest default.
  4. They won’t show you what they did. Every month should come with: work completed, rankings moved, calls/leads generated. Real numbers, not “impressions.”
  5. They own your GBP or your site. You should own every asset; the agency should be replaceable without losing your rankings.

Where Shaxx Digital lands, for comparison

Shaxx Digital publishes two Local SEO plans: $397/month Starter for one-city GBP work, on-page SEO, citations and reporting; and $597/month Authority, which adds monthly content, link building, review strategy and multi-city targeting. Question checklist for any SEO sales call

  • What exactly is delivered each month, in writing?
  • Who owns the site, content, and Business Profile? (Must be: you.)
  • What KPIs are we agreeing to, and what happens if you miss them?
  • Lock-in contract, or cancel anytime?
  • What did you do for a business like mine, with numbers? References?

Bottom line

Expect to invest $750–$2,000/month for local SEO that genuinely moves rankings in BC in 2026. Below that range, verify it’s a real maintenance program and not directory spam. Above it, make sure the extra spend maps to a harder market, not a nicer office.
